Liquid Cooling and CDU Procurement: What AI Data-Center Teams Should Define Early

—

1–2 minutes

High-density AI infrastructure is making liquid cooling a procurement issue, not merely a mechanical-design detail. Coolant distribution units (CDUs) sit between facility-side cooling and the technology cooling loop, so their requirements need to be coordinated early with both the IT deployment and the facility design.

Define the thermal requirement before sourcing

Start with heat load and redundancy, but do not stop there. CDU qualification can depend on capacity, flow, temperatures, pressure, fluid chemistry, heat-exchanger approach, pump configuration, controls, power requirements, connection sizes, physical footprint and integration with the facility water system.

The rack plan and the CDU plan are connected

As rack densities rise, the cooling architecture increasingly affects deployment sequencing. Procurement teams should align CDU quantity and capacity with rack population, redundancy philosophy, commissioning sequence and the facility’s available heat-rejection infrastructure.

Available does not automatically mean compatible

Secondary-market or surplus-new CDUs can create schedule options, but compatibility still needs engineering review. Verify the exact model and configuration, electrical requirements, controls, documentation, warranty status, storage history, location and delivery timing before relying on an available unit.

Source cooling alongside power

For AI deployments, power and cooling constraints should be screened together. A project that solves its electrical bottleneck but discovers a late thermal-infrastructure constraint has not solved the schedule. Treating transformers, UPS, generation, switchgear and liquid cooling as related procurement workstreams can surface risks earlier.

Have a time-sensitive requirement?

SmartBuy Distributors helps data-center developers, operators, EPCs and procurement teams identify credible secondary-market and off-market paths for power, cooling and critical infrastructure. Submit the specification, quantity, location and required timeline through the SmartBuy Sourcing Desk.

Availability, condition, documentation, warranty and commercial terms must be verified for each transaction. SmartBuy does not imply OEM authorization or ownership unless specifically documented.
